How to research an Etsy product idea before making it

A wooden recipe-book stand example: compare the right products, read buyer clues and decide what a small first test needs to establish.

By What Sells Next ·

WSN editorial research · Four public Etsy listings reviewed. Features reflect seller descriptions; the products were not independently tested.

1. Define the product and the decision.

Suppose you make wooden kitchen products and are considering a recipe-book stand. The first question is whether a small prototype deserves your time.

Start with a recognisable product phrase, such as wooden cookbook stand, and try the related wording wooden recipe book holder. Keep the object and intended use consistent while you investigate how sellers describe it.

Write a short brief: a finished wooden stand for a kitchen worktop, holding a real cookbook. That immediately separates your idea from a downloadable pattern, a miniature prop or a wall shelf.

2. Compare the right listings.

On 15 September 2026 we examined these four public Etsy listings. This is a small editorial sample, not a complete category survey or a saved WSN app result.

ListingWhat the seller describesHow to use it
Walnut cookbook holder
MyOldWhiskeyWorkshop
Natural walnut hardwood; cookbook, tablet and phone use; 13-inch width and a stated 1¾-inch book-holder depth.Compare material and the space available for a book.
Adjustable wooden recipe stand
CarolinaFarmhouseLLC
Adjustable angle, removable sliding support, and a 14½ × 10-inch main panel. Stain and hardware choices; wood species was not clearly established.Compare adjustment and storage. Check the material before treating it as equivalent to a hardwood design.
Oak cookbook and tablet stand
WaxwingStudioDesigns
Solid red oak, an adjustable base, an 11½ × 10½-inch main panel, stain choices and optional engraving.Compare function and material; separate the engraved option from a plain product.
Folding cookbook-holder plans
HousefulofHandmade
A downloadable PDF with measurements, materials and build instructions. No physical stand is shipped.Exclude from the finished-product price comparison.

A search result count would hide these differences. Open the listings and check what the buyer actually receives. A digital plan and a finished hardwood stand answer different buying needs.

3. Separate asking prices from sales evidence.

For each comparable physical item, record the selected variant, displayed currency, size, personalisation and shipping to the same destination. An advertised “from” price may refer to a different option from the one in the photograph.

We have not published a price range for this sample: the retrieved pages showed dollar symbols without a clearly established currency code, and delivery varied by destination. That is not enough for a reliable like-for-like total.

The walnut listing displayed item reviews dated 1 September and 25 August 2026. That is recent feedback on that listing. It does not establish the number of sales in this market, a conversion rate or what a new shop will earn.

Keep the signals separate. Listing prices show asking prices. Favourites show interest. Reviews provide partial buyer feedback. None is a complete sales ledger for a competing product.

4. Turn the comparison into a testable idea.

These listings compete on material, book fit, adjustment, storage and customisation. The sample does not establish that any of those features is an unmet gap. It does give a maker useful questions:

  • Will a thick cookbook stay open without the retaining edge covering the recipe?
  • Can the same support hold a tablet in its case?
  • Is the angle comfortable on the intended worktop?
  • How much space does the stand take when stored?

A practical first direction is a stand designed around one clear use, such as supporting a thick cookbook while storing easily. Treat that as a design hypothesis to test.

5. Make one prototype and measure the essentials.

Test the prototype with several books and a cased tablet. Record the supported sizes, the stability of the base, whether pages remain visible and how it packs away. Photograph the tests so buyers can judge the fit.

Work out your own material, finishing, labour, packaging and delivery costs before setting a price. Competitors’ asking prices tell you about positioning; they do not tell you whether your version is profitable.

If the prototype works, try a small initial quantity. Buyer questions, actual orders and production time can tell you what to improve before making more stock.

6. Keep the evidence with the decision.

Save the date, links, compared variants, important unknowns and your chosen next step. When the market or your design changes, you can see what needs checking again.

In WSN, the Etsy product research tool helps inspect listing, price and available review evidence around a specific idea. Crossover for Etsy explores a different product direction from a listing while you browse.

Once the product is defined, use the listing helper and our guide to choosing Etsy tags to explain it clearly to buyers.

Sources and limits

The four linked Etsy listings above were reviewed on 15 September 2026. Product details are seller descriptions, not independently verified specifications. Listings, options, reviews and prices can change. The sample was selected to explain comparison decisions and should not be treated as representative of all Etsy results.

No exact sales, search volumes, category growth or guaranteed opportunity is claimed. Read how WSN uses Etsy evidence for the app’s separate research method.
