Etsy API transparency

Exactly what Etsy data does in this product.

What Sells Next uses Etsy’s official API for public market research and an optional read-only connection to a seller’s own active listings.

Last updated 31 August 2026

Application purpose

What Sells Next helps Etsy makers research keywords, find distinctive physical-product ideas with Crossover, and improve existing listing copy. It combines maker capabilities with bounded Etsy marketplace evidence, then supports planning, build guides and saved listing drafts. Etsy outcome tracking is not currently offered.

It does not replace Etsy search, checkout, Shop Manager or seller fulfilment. Makers return to Etsy to create, manage and fulfil their listings.

How Etsy is used

Public researchOn-demand market checks

Active listings, asking prices and bounded listing-review signals are compared for a product phrase.

Seller authorisedYour active listings

A free OAuth connection can build your maker profile from your own shop.

Read onlyNo shop changes

What Sells Next does not create, edit, renew or delete Etsy listings.

Public marketplace information

For a product phrase entered by a maker or generated for their capabilities, the service may request:

  • active listing identifiers, titles, URLs, images and tags;
  • asking prices, favourites, reported views and listing timestamps;
  • public shop name, review summary and shop-wide sales count where Etsy returns them; and
  • listing-specific review counts and dates, plus up to ten recent reviews per sampled listing for fixed, English-language topic checks.

Buyer-topic checks read review text transiently and retain only topic labels, mention counts and sample coverage. A topic must appear across at least two listings before it is shown as recurring. Mentions do not indicate sentiment, complaints or unmet demand.

These fields are filtered into like-for-like samples. Shop-wide sales are never presented as sales for one listing, and the service does not invent conversion rates or exact competitor sales.

Competition Watch saves selected public shops and periodically compares their sales counters, active products, prices, views and aggregate dated review counts. Listing and recent-period sales are clearly labelled estimates derived from shop-specific public sales and review signals. Estimated revenue uses current asking prices and an estimated product mix where coverage is sufficient; it is not verified historical revenue. Missing evidence remains unavailable. No private competitor orders are accessed.

When you view your own connected shop in Competition Watch, optional read-only order access can replace estimates with recorded figures for the same dates. Items sold means paid item quantities before returns. Item revenue excludes delivery and tax and reflects discounts; revenue affected by unresolved refunds remains unavailable. Only complete date ranges are displayed. These private aggregates stay in the current page, are not shared with other watchers or sent to AI, and never train the competitor estimates. Choose Connect sales history to grant order access if your connection does not already include it.

Basic listing checks identify formatting and completeness issues. AI copy reviews assess title, description and tags from listings verified as belonging to your connected shop. Photos and image metadata are not sent to AI. Choosing Audit my shop starts individual reviews with progress and pause controls. WSN lists editorial issues and suggested edits. A green thumbs-up means no obvious issues were found in a completed text review; it is not an Etsy score or a prediction of sales. You review and apply any edits yourself.

Keyword research and Market Briefing

Keyword search estimates come from Keyword Tool’s modelled Etsy data, separately from the public listing observations returned by Etsy’s API. Available figures include estimated monthly searches, related phrases and monthly history, with collection dates shown. Search location is unconfirmed; a missing figure means unknown, not zero.

Weekly Market Briefing editions highlight selected patterns from these collected estimates and connect them to categories, followed topics and an optional shop profile. A weekly edition can compare monthly observations; it does not measure a week of Etsy searches. The Free demo uses labelled fictional figures. Neither search estimates nor Crossover ideas prove demand for a finished product or guarantee rankings or sales.

Connected-shop permission and fields

A seller connects on Etsy's own authorisation screen. What Sells Next requests shops_r to identify the seller's shop and listings_r to read its active listings. Both are read-only permissions. It keeps a compact profile containing listing titles, materials, tags, styles, listing count, price range and currency, plus the seller's Etsy user ID, shop ID and shop name.

Order access is optional. Choosing Connect order statistics requests the additional read-only transactions_r permission on Etsy's authorisation screen. Dated receipts are processed to count distinct paid orders containing the seller's own listing; cancelled and refunded orders are excluded. Buyer details from those responses are discarded and are not shown, stored in the application database or sent to the AI service. A saved scenario can retain only the aggregate count, its source and date range.

Access and refresh tokens are encrypted before storage. We do not request permission to publish or edit listings, and we never receive an Etsy password.

Etsy's reported listing view count has no documented reporting period and is not used as a last-30-days baseline. The seller supplies views for the same dates as the order count. Original creation dates are shown only when Etsy provides that field; renewal dates are not substituted. Copy changes do not establish a measured increase in traffic or sales.

Analytics and AI boundary

What Sells Next calculates summaries such as rounded, rough extrapolations of similar active listings, same-currency asking-price bands, favourites and recent listing-review activity. Searches currently use Etsy's UK buyer view; example cards may retain their displayed seller currency. Limited aggregate evidence may be included with the maker's brief when the OpenAI API generates planning help or a build guide.

Maker craft, materials and skills; a product concept; aggregate counts, price bands and evidence summaries; planning replies; selected title, description and tags for a requested review of your verified connected shop.Etsy access tokens; raw connected-shop responses; listing photos, photo URLs and image metadata; review text and review images; seller or buyer identity; customer names, addresses or messages; payment data.

Listing reviews use the OpenAI API with store=false, subject to its applicable retention controls. Supporting excerpts and review results are cached under the seller's account for six-hour reuse. Shop disconnection and workspace deletion remove these review records. We do not store image files or raw AI responses.

No scraping or credential collection

The application uses Etsy's documented API and respects its configured call limits. It does not scrape Etsy web pages, use browser extensions to harvest data, ask for member passwords, circumvent security controls or create extra API keys to evade limits.

Storage and freshness

  • Raw public Etsy API responses are processed for the requested result. Buyer-review text and identities are not retained. Fixed topic labels and aggregate counts may be retained in the 24-hour research cache and saved evidence snapshots.
  • Raw connected-shop responses, order receipts, buyer details and listing images are not retained in the application database.
  • Direct listing images, seller names, listing titles and links are removed before a public-market result is stored in a saved project.
  • Candidate wording may be cached in the browser for up to 24 hours to avoid unnecessary repeated calls.
  • Saved project guides can retain a labelled aggregate research snapshot, but do not present it as a fresh live result when reopened.

Seller controls

A connected seller can refresh their active listings or disconnect from the main product. Disconnecting deletes the stored Etsy tokens and imported shop summary linked to that account. The Support page also provides a combined deletion control.
