How to choose Etsy tags for handmade products

Use a personalised leather journal example to turn accurate product details into 13 candidate tags, a clear title and a useful description.

By What Sells Next ·

Worked editorial example. The phrases below are not measured keyword demand or an automated research report.

1. Write down what is true.

“Leather journal” is a starting point. It does not tell us the size, page format, construction or personalisation options. Those facts make the difference between a useful phrase and a misleading tag.

Our example product brief

A travel journal with a hand-stitched brown leather cover and a leather tie closure. Includes one removable A5 insert with 160 blank pages (80 sheets). The insert can be replaced when full. Optional engraving of up to three initials on the cover. Sold as one journal with one insert.

These are chosen facts for the example. Use your own confirmed facts for a real listing.

Never add “full-grain leather”, “handmade paper” or “fountain pen friendly” because a keyword tool suggests it. A popular phrase does not change the product you sell.

2. Set the category and attributes first.

Choose the most specific accurate Etsy category and fill in the relevant attributes. Etsy uses these when matching searches. An exact phrase already covered by a category or attribute does not need its own identical tag.

A longer phrase can still be useful. If a category or attribute covers “leather”, a more specific phrase such as “leather notebook” describes the item more fully. Check the final set against the category and attributes you actually select.

3. Give each phrase a reason to be there.

Think about the item, material, construction, function and buyer context. Different phrases can describe the same product without filling every slot with tiny variations of one phrase.

Candidate phraseCharactersWhy it fits this brief
personalised journal20The product and its optional engraved initials.
leather notebook16The confirmed cover material.
refillable journal18The insert can be replaced when full.
blank page journal18The actual page format, without lines or prompts.
leather tie journal19The way the cover closes.
gift for writer15A possible buying context, not a claim about demand.

Etsy allows up to 13 tags, each no longer than 20 characters including spaces. Its guidance encourages using all 13 with relevant multiword phrases. Do not spend slots on intentional misspellings or singular/plural versions of the same words.

4. Build a complete draft, then check it.

Here is the example title, description and all 13 candidate tags together. They demonstrate a method. Replace anything that does not match your product or duplicates your selected category and attributes.

Keep the places, people and small details of a journey together in a leather travel journal. The hand-stitched brown leather cover holds an A5 notebook, with a leather tie to keep it closed between entries. Choose optional engraved initials to make it your own. WHAT YOU RECEIVE One brown leather journal cover with one removable A5 insert. The insert contains 160 blank pages (80 sheets), ready for travel notes, daily reflections and ideas. There are no printed prompts or ruled lines, so you can arrange each page your way. MAKE IT PERSONAL The cover can be engraved with up to three initials, or left plain. Add your own initials for a notebook to take on your next trip, or choose the recipient’s initials for a personal gift. KEEP THE COVER, START A NEW CHAPTER When the notebook is full, remove the insert and replace it with a compatible A5 refill. Your completed pages can be kept separately while you continue using the same leather cover. One insert is included with this journal. Use it to record a weekend away, keep notes along a longer route or make space for a little writing each day.

Product facts used in this example

A travel journal with a hand-stitched brown leather cover and a leather tie closure. Includes one removable A5 insert with 160 blank pages (80 sheets). The insert can be replaced when full. Optional engraving of up to three initials on the cover. Sold as one journal with one insert.

Care, ordering and dispatch details are deliberately left for the maker to confirm. This is a teaching example, not a listing ready to publish unchanged.

Look at what would happen if the product changed: a fixed insert would rule out “refillable journal”; lined pages would rule out “blank page journal”; removing engraving would change the personalisation phrases.

5. Keep the title and description readable.

Etsy’s current title advice favours a clear item name and important objective details. It suggests considering fewer than 15 words; that is a recommendation, not a new hard character limit. Avoid repeating the same words or packing generic gift phrases into the title.

Our example title is Personalised Leather Travel Journal, A5 Refillable Notebook with Initials. A buyer can see the product, material, size and personalisation quickly.

The description opens naturally with the item and its use, then explains what arrives. Before publishing, add the confirmed care instructions, refill fit, personalisation ordering steps, making time and delivery information. These details should come from you, not be invented to complete the copy.

6. Learn from the listing after publication.

Record when you change the title or tags. Use Etsy Shop Stats to review the search terms bringing visitors and whether visits turn into orders. Allow for price, photographs, seasonality and delivery: tag changes alone cannot explain every change in performance.

Listing phrases seen elsewhere are useful candidates. They are not exact search volumes or evidence that your product will sell. If the product itself is still uncertain, research the idea before polishing its listing.
