Small-batch pottery + a reused flower jar

One ceramic topper.
A jar becomes a small vase.

A flower frog is a stem arranger. This pottery idea puts holes in a fitted jar topper, giving a few cut stems a place to stand.

By What Sells Next · Editorial product concept ·

Make the accessory, not another whole vase.

Start with someone who likes a small flower display and already has a suitable jar. The design challenge is a topper that sits securely, holds the intended stems and is straightforward to clean.

Choose a specific jar opening to test. A reused-jar concept still needs a clear fit description; “fits any jar” is not a useful promise.

A topper has different neighbours from a vase.

Etsy’s flower-frog lid results contain ceramic and stoneware jar toppers, printed inserts, metal mesh lids and complete vintage vessels. Compare new ceramic toppers with equivalent fit and contents; a whole vase or a digital file is a different purchase.

Laguna’s clay-body specifications include firing range, shrinkage and absorption. Your own clay, glaze and firing results determine the finished fit; do not copy another clay body’s shrinkage figure into your template.

The sources establish existing product formats and a making constraint. They do not measure demand for this concept, and we have not collected keyword volumes, sales or a reliable comparable price band.

Test what the buyer will actually do.

  1. Compare the same offer.

Research “ceramic flower frog” and “ceramic jar topper”. Separate toppers sold alone from jar-and-topper sets, vintage pieces and craft files. Note opening size, overall dimensions, hole layout and delivered price.

  2. Measure after firing.

Use a clay and glaze combination you know, following the suppliers’ firing guidance. Make a test piece, then measure the finished opening and seating surface. Check it on the stated jar, with water and the intended stems, for rocking or tipping. Check edges and whether the holes remain easy to clean.

  3. Allow for the pieces you cannot sell.

Record clay, glaze, firing, finishing time, rejected pieces and protective packaging. Etsy’s pricing guidance includes materials, labour and overhead rather than materials alone. Show the tested fit and state clearly whether the jar and flowers are included.

Go further when: the fired piece fits reliably, the arrangement is stable and the price covers firing, failures and packing. If you plan to sell at a market, try the craft-fair profit calculator to include the event costs too.
